FRUIT UNTO GOD OR FRUIT UNTO DEATH?
Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
If I am truly seeking to obey God, then I need to know the answer to a very important and vital question – Am I bringing forth “fruit unto God” or “fruit unto death”?
“Fruit unto God” describes the product, result, and effects of God’s free, sovereign grace in salvation by Jesus Christ our Lord. “Fruit unto death” describes the product, result, and effects of man’s efforts in the flesh to make himself righteous and holy before God. All who bring forth “fruit unto God” know that they cannot make themselves righteous and holy by their works and efforts to obey. They know that Christ and Him crucified is their only righteousness and holiness before God. They rest in Him for all salvation and know they are secure because of His grace, love, and power towards and in them. They know they do not produce “fruit unto God,” but Christ by the Holy Spirit produces such fruit in them.
One might ask, “How can I bring forth such fruit unto God?”
The answer is simple – Look to and rest in Christ for all salvation, righteousness, and life.
